Records of the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Des Moines, 1936-1995.

The records consist of administrative and topical files, policy and procedural documents, and public relations materials. The Community Involvement series highlights the League's three programs, the Observers, who attend and report on local and regional government meetings, the Speakers Bureau, which provides lecturers on topics concerning governmental issues, and the Voters Services program which provides information on voting and non-partisan profiles of candidates and issues. The Programs Series contains the study guides used by the League during its study and discussions of local, state, national and international issues. Principal topics include the council-manager form of city government, home rule for local and county government, reapportionment of legislative districts of the Iowa General Assembly, desegregation and integration in the public schools, and affordable housing in the community.

Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Des Moines, formerly called the Des Moines League of Women Voters, is a non-partisan organization which provides community education and public awareness on political issues. In 1944 the league lost its charter for endorsing the Republican Party in violation of its tenets, but was rechartered later in the same year.
